Fallstreak holes, or hole-punch clouds, form when supercooled droplets freeze from a pressure drop (passing aircraft) or nuclei, creating ice crystals. The crystals then grow larger until they precipitate out and sublimate in dry air below causing a hole in the clouds.

When snow is held over a lighter, it turns black as soot from incomplete combustion settles on the surface. The snow doesn’t melt but sublimates directly into vapor from intense localized heat, bypassing the liquid phase. It's not 'plastic snow'.
